Don’t set alerts for everything

alertsIt is useful to set some form of alert/alarm for parts of your day.

Personally, I set alerts for scheduled appointments and phone calls, to ensure that I am not late or forgetting them. OK, sometimes I also have to set an alarm to remind myself to eat. But I am not setting an alert for every task I have set for my day.

Have you ever had an alarm go off and hit the snooze? Or had a computer alert pop up only to snooze/dismiss it – and promptly forget about what it was there for?

Too many alerts and alarms become noise and defeat their original purpose.

So, determine what are the really important items you need alerts for, and set them.

Then honor them when they come up.

    I’m not a fan of the alerts for myself….they are distracting to me, and I want to work with more discipline about time within myself. But I know a lot of people who live by those little “dings”……

      Sue, I agree! Mostly I find them distracting – or just noise which is too easy to ignore. So, I just set alerts for key appointments that I really do not want to miss!

  2. I use alarms sometimes and find them helpful! I am pleased to hear you use them to remind yourself to eat!!! this is something many of my busy clients find helpful and I encourage it!

      Well Trudy, I hate to admit, but I discovered long ago that I need to be reminded to eat – so it is definitely one of the reminders I set!

      Yes, Carmen – Like anything else you allow to accumulate, it soon becomes clutter! And then you just don’t see (or hear) it any more…

    I think, as with everything, there is a fine line when it comes to “alerts”. I’ve learned to set them for the important things and remove them for others. I found myself ignoring them if they were not vital. 🙂
